Say whats good to J.Bully(Reppin North Carolina).Ive been rocking with Bully for a minute.Bullys spits that ish with emotion,Slick with the flow and delivery.Every time I hear one of his joints it puts me in a mood, and Hip Hop hasnt done that for me in a minute. So for those of you that dont know sit back and get familiar with J.Bully........YOUR WELCOME,YOUR ALL WELCOME.
1.FOR THOSE THAT DONT KNOW WHAT LABEL OR GROUP ARE YOU SIGNED TO PRESENTLY?
JB: I'm signed to an indie label called The Mogul Group based out of ATL and NYC. Check www.mogulgroup.net
2.HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT TODAYS HIP HOP,AND WHEN I SAY THAT I MEAN IT ALL THE HOT SHIT THE WACK SHIT....HIP HOP AS A WHOLE AND ITS DIRECTION?
JB: To me hip-hop has always been stable, balanced, creative and consistent. Its the music industry and radio/tv programming that has us looking f&^ked up. Just because this empty music is generally the only rap music with any push from the major labels and its all that plays on videos and radio all day doesn't mean that the internet, mom and pops stores and even major retailers haven't carried or aren't carrying creative, positive, different, independent hip-hop and rap music. As consumers we have to make a choice to pick up what's ill and not just download it for free. Those sales are what the programmers and a&r's look at to determine what kind of music WE want. Like Wale said 'hip-hop ain't dead I think its just the fans'....not J.BULLY fans tho!
3.AS A UNDERGROUND ARTIST ,IS IT HARDER FOR YOU TO GET YOUR MUSIC TO THE MASSES,OR ARE THINGS STARTING TO SWING YOUR WAY?
JB: while the internet and mp3's have pretty much killed the idea of a unsigned, talented and unique artist going to a label meeting and walking away with a recording contract, those technologies have also leveled the playing field to a certain degree for independent artists. With internet marketing and distribution of music...and networking sites like myspace, reverbnation etc....the often prohibitive costs of promotional material and touring can be bypassed through thorough online marketing. My digital distribution deal allows me to capitalize on fans demand for my music without having to chunk out major upfront money for manufacturing and shipping to retail outlets. As for me personally? The release of my new 'Bully-Hill' album will represent the upswing for me. I'm sure of it!
4.HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT MIXTAPES.
JB: Mixtapes are dope when they have ill concepts or at the very least are put together and mixed and blended by a dj. I also prefer mixtapes with concepts or at least original material over those with the newest mp3s lined up with no artistic arrangement/scratching/mixing or those mixtapes where mediocre artist spit over industry beats when their original music sucks. Mixtape djs with hustle and skills will always put out dope music. These mp3 downloader/compilers need to step they game up. From the biz side? Big artists win and lose with mixtapes...and indie artists should concentrate on putting an album together instead of 40 mixtapes over other cat's hits.
5.DO YOU THINK,THE INTERNET IS DESTROYING HIP HOP,LIKE MANY PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT?
JB: I think the lack of fan support (buying good music and not buying wack music), the lack of artist development, majors pushing bullsh!t music, artists lack of respect for the genre, and wack programming are responsible for some of the problems in hip-hop. But hip-hop ain't goin nowhere. These knuckleheads can't destroy hip-hop. Its too powerful.
6.HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WHERE YOUR AT IN YOUR CAREER THUS FAR,AND WHERE TO YOU ULTIMATELY WANT TO TAKE IT?
JB: I'm on my way. I'm becoming a complete polished artist. But I ain't there yet. I want to be in everybody's top five. So I gotta do everything an emcee would have to accomplish to be that to everyone..its a monumental goal but that's my career path...I'm coming....
7.FAV. BIGGIE JOINT AND WHY?
JB: man honestly I listen to a lot of Biggie and the stories are just so dope....I like most of his pre-posthumous work...but 'real niggas do real things' off that mister cee mixtape is still one of the illest to me cuz it was so hip-hop the way it jacked beats but that song also gave us a glimpse of the biggie after 'ready to die' and before 'life after death'
8.FAV. TUPAC JOINT AND WHY?
JB: 'brenda Had Baby' cuz that was one of his most influential records. He was one of the first cats who did 'gangsta rap' who really showed us it wasn't soft to show versatility to create such a powerful record. He kinda re-defined how reality records can impact our community.
9.SANAA LATHAN OR NIA LONG AND WHY?
JB: sanaa lathan cuz she is like the perfect woman next door. I ain't hatin on nia long tho. (What's up with that question? Haha)
10.BALD , BUSH ,OR NEATLY TRIMMED?
JB: bald. Look at me!
11.TOP 5 MC'S (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)
Slick Rick Biggie JayZ NaS J.Bully
12.ANY WORDS,OR THOUGHTS FOR THE PEOPLE THAT THINK HIP HOP IS ALL NEGATIVE?
JB: open your eyes!
13.DO YOU THINK A PROMOTION SITE LIKE THIS WILL BE HELPFUL FOR ARTISTS,SUCH AS YOURSELF AND DJ'S,AND FANS WHO WANT TO ESCAPE FROM THE SO CALLED HIP HOP,THAT THEY PLAY ALL DAY ON T.V AND JUST CANT FIND THE HOT SHIT WE'RE LOOKING FOR?
JB: anytime you have an uncensored outlet for art its a great thing. When you create forums in which we can freely discuss art as it relates to our lives that's even better. Do the damn thing...
14.WHEN CAN WE DO SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST OFFICIAL STRICKLEE HIP HOP MIXTAPE?
JB: asap homie. Lemme know. Shoot me a beat!
